Why I get outdoors

Why I get outdoors

I enjoy resilience and self-reliance. It's incredibly liberating to get out of the city, lose cell service, and know that I might disappear for a day or two until I extricate myself from whatever situation I've gotten into. But there's another reason I get outdoors...

On my way down lonely mountain roads, I wardrive - because, well, I'm a nerd. It's much easier to study signals and understand principles of wireless networks when there's no noise, and I can account for every device I discover. It's even more interesting when I see something pop up that shouldn't be there - like a hidden traffic camera or a trail cam. Or, if I have the right equipment, I can see the probe requests from others within range who may be camping near me, pull up their addresses based on their SSIDs, and go down an OSINT rabbit hole.

I do wonder, though - is there an application for capturing probe requests and/or beacons from drones for rescue/lost hiker missions? I think so... I'm definitely going to write a blog post on this someday and set up a training scenario for it - ping me with some more ideas, I think it'd be a fun post.
